Shoot 12 - Work Diary

This shoot is considerably similar to the previous two shoots but has a slight variable. I attempted to illustrate the influence of Brian Smith but not in deep, emotional and serious way as before. This time I wanted to explore the positive and bright and warm approach in order to display a much happier mood/atmosphere. To do this I used a white background and used one softbox each side of the subject. However when doing this I encountered an issue which was my camera wasn't taking pictures. This was due to the change in levels of light through the introduction of a white background and another softbox. I then altered the settings on the softboxes and camera and was ready to shoot.  I feel that in order to improve this shoot I could of used more poses which could perhaps enhance the happiness of the subject. Also I could've shown a further influence of Brian if I still remained to use a black background and clothing and just increased the saturation of the face and used an affective facial expression and pose to create a similar outcome.

In this photograph I have used colour in order to convey the theme of happiness.  The colours seen are much warmer and saturated than before but the colour scheme still looks clean and modernised. I changed the colour of the tie by selecting it with the lasso tool and change the colour balance, this is because before it was blue which I felt was cold and contradicted my intentions. There is much less shadows than my previous shoots as I have used two softboxes and a white background which come together to produce a much brighter and vibrant piece. I also applied the dodge tool to the teeth of the model to make them look whiter and therefore contribute to the brightness of the whole image. The colour is one of the main indicators, other than the facial expression, of the mood and emotion of the photograph.

This photograph contrasts with the above as it is colourless and in black and white. However this works perfectly with the denoted emotion. The black and white effect works very successfully in show the tone and form of the subject face as the great contrast highlights the shape of the face. The tonal piece enhances the emotion shown in the subjects face. He is looking down avoid eye contact looking away from the camera. This has connotations of depression and sadness and even stress due to his clothing, he could be stressed due to work or occupation. Also the fact that the camera is position slightly higher than the subject shows that it is looking down at him. Shadows and darkness have very negative connotations of death and depression and in this case work very well with the overall theme.

This was a computer experiment where I used an interesting technique to gain the shown outcome. I firstly selected the outline of the subject and then copy and pasted once onto two separate layers. I the changed the colour of each layer drastically to a red and another to and blue. After this I slightly misaligned the copied versions away from the original image and slightly reduced their opacity to make them look more muted. These misalignments can clearly be seen and provide a fuzzy misleading and confusing outcome and I feel that is has illustrates movement very well.

  1. a very good post, I would as a general point as all learners to use the camera controls of SO, aperture and shutter speed to help describe the visual outcomes... Though this might sound trivial as you have the expertise to execute a strong shoot, you need to demonstrate a confident ability to create images, develop ideas and evaluate using appropriate terminology, if you use these terminologies you will be able to discus DOF, point of focus and so on. With reference to the photograph you should show the lighting set up as a lighting diagram when working in the studio with the light meter readings used.. for each time you use the studio.. This is particularly more important at the higher grade levels... If you do this you will gain confidence and be able to work more independently. As a final point create a studio page with images of the light shaping equipment and the effects they achieve.. you can refer to this in subsequent shoots and be able to describe the difference between diffuse and directional light...

Finally, one last issue that needs to be addressed that is your use of Photoshop. this needs to feature more in your blogs and hence what you can do is bring in more screen prints showing the layers and image changes again this will demonstrate sustained investigations and an ability to record and critically review your work... AO1 and AO3
